One person is dead and three hurt after two semi-trucks and a car crashed in Cumberland County on Saturday afternoon.
The accident happened at mile marker 335 around 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said Donna Brennan, 63, of Overton County was traveling east when she tried to cross a median. She hit a tractor trailer hauling furniture head-on, causing it to explode. Troopers said a second semi swerved and hit the vehicles as well.
According to THP, Brennan was killed in the accident. The first truck driver Albert Galvin, 52, and his passenger Caroyn Galvin, both of Rocky Mound, Virginia, were flown to UT Medical Center. Authorities said Carolyn was in the sleeper without a seat belt. Their current conditions are unknown.
The second truck driver Raymond Marsh Martin, 56, of Palm Bay, Florida was taken to Cumberland County Medical Center. His passenger Gerald Rhonden of Thorton County walked away unhurt. They both were wearing seat belts.
THP said drugs and alcohol weren't involved.
Authorities have reopened all lanes of traffic. They said they cleared the accident and allowed traffic back into the area around 11 p.m. Saturday.
The right shoulder of the road will stay closed over the weekend. The trucks will remain on the side of I-40 until Monday.
The crash forced authorities to close both westbound lanes of I-40 at the scene of the accident. Officials said eastbound traffic also slowed because of distracted drivers.
Officers directed traffic onto Highway 70 to bypass the accident.
