The mayor of Huntsville is expected to be released from the hospital over the weekend, as he recovers from quadruple bypass surgery.

Town recorder Wendy Buttram said Mayor George Potter had heart attack warning signs while at the office last week.

After going home, he was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Potter did not have a heart attack, but did have blockages, Buttram said.

Doctors at Saint Mary's Hospital in Knoxville performed the quadruple bypass surgery on Monday.

Potter's daughter said Knox County Commissioner Dr. Richard Briggs did the surgery.  "We had a politician on either end," Paula Bridges said.

Bridges said her father is doing well and wants to thank the community for its prayers.

Potter is 73-years-old.  He has served as Huntsville's mayor since 2002.

Buttram said Monday's aldermen meeting was the first one Potter had missed since taking office.
