Rockwood's long-time public works director has resigned.

At Monday's city council meeting, Rockwood Mayor James Watts read Tom Pierce's letter of resignation.

Mr. Pierce served as public works director for 15 years. He has been on unpaid administrative leave since February.

He is being investigated for using the city's credit card to buy $6,000 worth of firearms.

Mayor Watts says this is a huge loss for the city of Rockwood.

"Mr. Pierce was an extremely talented individual, did a whole lot of things for the city of Rockwood. We had a tremendous amount of confidence in his ability. We're going to be hurting with the loss of his employment. But we'll move on," said Mayor Watts.

He says Pierce's former position will be filled soon.
