The IRS is warning East Tennesseans of scammers who pretend to be IRS employees conducting a telephone survey.

The agency says it does not do direct surveys of taxpayers by phone.

The IRS says scammers may be trying to trick people into providing private information or sending money. Or, they may pretend to be tax experts, claiming to know about tax breaks or benefits.

They could make contact through flyers, email, text or even tweets.

If someone suspicious contacts you, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
