OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) -- The public warning siren system near the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant in Oak Ridge is being replaced, and officials are warning residents that the sirens will be tested this week.

The vendor will be testing the sirens on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the sirens could be sounded multiple times during this time frame. According to a news release from Y-12, the new sirens may also be louder than the old ones.

The sirens would be used in the event of an actual emergency at the Y-12 National Security Complex. The system is composed of 22 electronic sirens that provide coverage for the immediate notification zone that extends out two miles from the complex.
