Governor Bredesen today revised his position on setting a state minimum wage above the federal level.
He said a hike may be necessary to maintain income levels for the state's workers.
Bredesen said he decided that waiting for a federal increase would mean decreased earnings for Tennesseans because of inflation.
The governor had earlier expressed concern that raising the state minimum wage could drive jobs to other states that have lower wage levels.
Tennessee does not have a state minimum wage, but there's an effort in the Legislature to set one.
