Governor Bredesen today launched a new health and wellness campaign. It's aimed at preventing Type Two diabetes and encouraging people who live in Tennessee to live healthier lifestyles.
Bredesen announced his Get Fit Tennessee program at the Insurers of Tennessee annual convention in Nashville. The governor appointed former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George as the campaign spokesman.
The initiative is part of Project Diabetes, which falls under the governor's Cover Tennessee insurance program for uninsured adults.
Bredesen says besides providing insurance, the state has an interest in keeping people healthy.
George says people's health becomes either an asset or a liability at some point in their lives. The Heisman Trophy winner says it's best to make sure it's an asset.
The Tennessee Heart Association puts Tennessee third in the nation for childhood obesity and among the top five for Type Two diabetes in children.
