A newborn boy is recovering in a Bowling Green hospital after being found abandoned in a shoe box. The child was around five pounds, a full-term baby. Simpson County Sheriff Gene Starks says medical personnel estimate that the child had been in front of the Franklin, Kentucky, residence where he was found yesterday for up to three hours. Starks says the boy's umbilical cord had been cut but not sealed, so he lost some bodily fluids and his internal temperature was low. Starks says the child is doing well and could be released today or tomorrow. He will initially be a ward of the state.
