One of the most controversial new laws Tennessee has seen in years goes into effect on Monday.
The Non-Smoker Protection Act bans smoking in most enclosed public places including restaurants, shops and hotels. The Health Department and the Labor Department will enforce the ban and officials say violators will be fined.
Individuals who smoke in areas where smoking is prohibited are subject to a $50 penalty. Businesses will receive a warning letter for their first violation, a $100 penalty for their second violation and a $500 penalty each time after that.
