A sinkhole spreading under Highway 11E is now widening into a much bigger project.

First Tennessee Department of Transportation crews closed down the northbound lanes of Highway 11E in Jefferson City to fix a nearby sinkhole that threatened to spread under the roadway.

The sinkhole first began to form in the parking lot of Dixie Pawn (map).

TDOT estimated the repairs would take much of Monday but would allow 11E to reopen late Monday afternoon. Late in the day, they realized the sinkhole had spread farther and faster than they anticipated, so they planned to start again Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning, they found a water leak.

The water department wants to sort out where the leak is coming from, so they can patch it up.

TDOT has now shifted all traffic into the southbound lanes of 11E. There is not yet any indication when the roadwork will be finished.
