The widow of a Knox County District Attorney General has been indicted on a first degree murder charge in his 1992 death.
Leath's attorney, James A.H. Bell, tells 10News that law enforcement officers arrived at Raynella Dossett-Leath's residence around 8:00 a.m. Thursday. Leath surrendered as the papers were served. She was transported to the Knox County Detention Center and was later released on a $25,000 bond.
Leath is already charged with the shooting death of her second husband, David Leath in March, 2003.
She will go to trial September 8 for Leath's death.
An investigation has been underway to determine whether she played a role in the death of her first husband, Knox County District Attorney General Ed Dossett.
At the time of his death, Dossett was terminally ill with cancer and had a morphine pump.
Dossett's death was ruled an accident when he was found apparently trampled by his cattle.
Later toxicology tests showed extraordinary levels of morphine in his system, to the point that a medical examiner stated her belief he would be unable to walk in such a condition.
Attorney James A.H. Bell said his client is remaining positive after the indictment.
"Mrs. Leath is doing well," Bell added. "She has the love and support from her two daughters from Mr. Dossett. She has the love and support from family members. She has the love and support from the community. Her legal defense team is behind her 110%." Bell said his client is not guilty of the charge.
Special Prosecutor Randy Fisher said the indictment comes after a 12-month investigation.
"The cold case division of the Knox County Sheriff's Department looks at old cases. This is one of them. Evidence was developed and submitted to the Grand Jury," Fisher said.
