Members of many faith communities across East Tennessee continue the healing process following the deadly shooting at a Knoxville church.
On Sunday, July 27, authorities say Jim Adkisson opened fire during a children's performance at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on Kingston Pike. Nine people were wounded, eight of those shot. Two people died from their wounds.
Saturday morning the Church of the Savior United Church of Christ hosted an interfaith prayer service. Members of that church's congregation, as well as others from around Knoxville and beyond, gathered for music, worship and fellowship.
Leaders say many congregants feel violated after the shooting, but it's important not to let that tragedy change the church's beliefs.
"A lot of times we forget that there are churches and congregations that are in the community, working for social justice, reaching out to create peace, places of inclusion for all people," said pastor John Gill. "And to some extent, it appears that Tennessee Valley was targeted because of this legacy, but it's also a rich legacy to become aware of".
Sunday morning the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church will hold a rededication service in their sanctuary. It will be the first service there since the shooting.
