WBIR anchor emeritus Bill Williams has done so much to help children in East Tennessee. In 1980, he started "Monday's Child," which has helped hundreds of children get into good homes.
For decades, he's been the main host for the local Children's Miracle Network, which has raised millions of dollars for East Tennessee Children's Hospital.
In the mid 1990s, Bill began featuring some of the needy families in rural parts of Appalachia. Since then, he's helped Mission of Hope provide back-to-school supplies and Christmas presents to the children in that area.
Today, Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale and other community leaders honored Bill for his years of work on behalf of our youth.
"We want to name our administration building here at the John Tarleton Home after him," Ragsdale said.
Now that building is officially named "The Bill Williams Administration Building."
"It's a thrill, but I'm not a hero," Williams said at the ceremony. "I'm just a messenger. The people who adopt those children are the heroes. I'm just a messenger."
Mayor Ragsdale also proclaimed Wednesday "Bill Williams Day."
Congratulations, Bill! This is well deserved.
