Cookeville-- A small explosion at a Cookeville school evacuated students on Wednesday morning, and a second school in Cookeville has been evacuated after a blasting cap was found at the football field.

A homemade device apparently was brought to Avery Trace Middle School and set off in a trash can. Cookeville Police Capt. Nathan Honeycutt said a soda bottle filled with chemicals exploded in a trash can Wednesday morning.

Police also found an exploded blasting cap near the football field of Cookeville High School.

Students from both schools were evacuated to the Hooper Eblen Center on the Tennessee Tech University campus. Classes are canceled for the day.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Police believe the two incidents are unrelated. Neither school had received any threat. The Tennessee Bomb and Arson Squad is assisting the investigation.
