As Anderson County students record memories of another school year, retiring Director of Schools V.L. Stonecipher is looking back at a career in education that spans 43 years.
"This picture is of a 2nd grade class at Briceville Elementary school in, I guess in 1951-52," explained Stonecipher as he pointed out the black and white photograph.
The picture shows Stonecipher alongside classmate and former Director of Schools Jim Stewart. The two started with the system as students in 1950, and Stonecipher began teaching in 1966.
"The rooms were larger, not much equipment, plenty of chalk and erasers. Every once in a while we got to maybe use an overhead projector," Stonecipher remembered.
Over the last two days, he has visited all 17 schools in the system.
"It's been really emotional, especially when I went back to Briceville, where I started," said Stonecipher.
Each school has honored him in some way.
"This is an official Clinton Hawks jersey number 1, because you've been number one for us," said Clinton Middle School Principal Bob Stokes as he presented Stonecipher with the jersey.
While Stonecipher was visiting Clinton Middle, he witnessed one of his former students being recognized as teacher of the year.
"So he's been a big part of my education since I was a small child," said Caleb Tipton.
"I feel proud of the accomplishments of our students and our staff," said Stonecipher.
The Claxton Elementary School gym was dedicated to Stonecipher. He was principal there for 12 years.
