Knox County Commissioners ended their monthly meeting Monday night in heated debate, again, over Law Director Bill Lockett who admitted to pocketing money meant for his former law firm.

But this time, discussion centered on whether commissioners are over-doing it.

"In terms of resolution after resolution after resolution, let's try not to pass anymore of these. I think we've made our statement. We had a special called meeting, censured him, did all kinds of things, so let's move on," said Commissioner Samuel McKenzie.

The debate was in response to three resolutions brought forth by Commissioner Amy Broyles late tonight. Two would have forced Lockett to disclose loans he's received or cease to legally represent the commission in any way.

The other asked Lockett's former law firm to answer questions about what they knew and when.

Though some commissioners supported broyles' resolutions, many argued they've done enough, saying any more resolutions condemning Lockett might start to hinder the investigation.

"I don't want to be a stumbling block to this investigation. I want to be careful that we do not ask for evidence that could be used in criminal or civil action," said Commissioner Brad Anders.

"If you want to vote it down, then by all means do so, but I've done my due diligence when it comes to my constituents," Commissioner Broyles said.

One resolution was withdrawn, the other two were voted down.

Earlier Monday afternoon, the Commission has passed a twofold resolution asking the State Attorney General to pursue an ouster of Law Director Bill Lockett and to retain an outside counsel for the sole purpose of getting Lockett out of office.

The resolution, brought by Commissioner Dave Wright, would give Chair Thomas "Tank" Strickland the authority to seek outside legal counsel to be retained for the sole purpose of legal work to get Lockett out of office.

An amendment to that resolution, brought forth by Commissioner Mike Hammond, will send a letter to the State Attorney General's Office, asking for a prompt investigation into an ouster. It also asks for proceedings to include a prompt suspension of Lockett from office, a prohibilition against him receiving compensation, and for an expedited process.

Lockett has admitted to misappropriating money from the private firm where he worked before taking office. Since then, agencies ranging from the IRS to the TBI have begun investigations into the matter.
