A Clinton Police officer, arrested for DUI on Sunday, has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.
A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper picked up Officer Matthew Howell early Sunday morning, near the intersection of Kingston Pike and Lovell Road, just before 1 a.m.
Howell told the trooper he is a Clinton police officer. The arresting officer said Howell was cooperative at the scene but did refuse to take a field sobriety test.
Monday, Clinton Police Chief Rick Scarbrough released a statement saying Howell was placed on administrative leave as of 4 p.m. Sunday.
Scarbrough said Howell had called him and notified him of his arrest.
Scarbrough also said he met with Howell and investigators Monday morning, as part of the internal affairs process. Howell is to remain on leave, pending the outcome of that investigation.
His court date in Knox County is set for September 17.
