Eighteen families were evacuated in Rutherford County because of persistent rain that had cows wading in water almost up to their neck.

However the fast-moving flood waters receded by late Thursday afternoon and the sun peeked through in some areas.

No one was reported hurt.

The worst area hit was Christiana south of Murfreesboro in Rutherford County, where a football was seen floating across a front yard.

Boats and tractors were used to rescue people stranded in their homes.

Schools in Lawrence and Wayne counties were closed because of the flooding. Two classrooms in Lawrence County were flooded.

In Nashville, the Tennessee Titans tried to practice outdoors until lightning drove them indoors.
