Tenn. man receives military medals after 70 year wait

A veteran from Tennessee is getting recognition for his military service 70 years ago.

The Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs presented several medals Saturday to 93-year-old First Class Petty Officer James L. Horton.

The honors are linked to his time on board the USS Denver from 1943 and 1944 during World War Two.

He was on the ship with 300 others when it sustained an air attack that killed 20 crew members. After World War Two, his mission was to help recover prisoners of war.

Horton, a Sumner County native, is one of only six shipmates still alive today from the USS Denver crew.

On Saturday, he received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (1 silver service star, 3 bronze service stars), America Campaign Medal, World War Two Victory Medal and Combat Action Medal.
