Truck topples historic pillar outside Island Home neighborhood

(WBIR-Knoxville) A nearly 100-year-old pillar at the entrance to the Island Home neighborhood was flattened Thursday morning by a semi-truck that wasn't supposed to be on that street.

The truck, owned by Celadon Trucky Company, ignored detour signs routing him around the closed Island Home Avenue. Once he got onto Maplewood Avenue, according to Knoxville Police, he couldn't get turned around and hit the pillar.

The stone pillar, one of two marking the entrance to the neighorhood, was toppled to the ground.

Officials blamed the accident on an inexperienced driver not following directions, and will file no charges.

In addition to the detour signs, there are signs up that say "No trucks."

Jim Staub, president of the Island Home Park Neighborhood Association, said the company had promised to repair the damage.
