A loaded gun was discovered in a passenger's carry-on bag Monday morning at Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS).
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) discovered the loaded Kimber .45 caliber pistol at the airport checkpoint around 7:30 a.m. Airport police took possession of the bag and cited the passenger.
This is the 12th firearm discovered at TYS this year. Last year, 18 weapons were caught at the security checkpoint.
“Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the checkpoint,” said Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson. “Our advice is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.”
Firearms are not allowed in carry-on bags, but may be transported in checked baggage, as long as they are declared to the airline, unloaded, and in a proper carrying case.
