The first new nuclear reactor in the U.S. in the 21st century is nearing completion.
TVA says the Watts Bar Unit 2 reactor is more than 90 percent complete and moving through key testing. It weights about 282,000 pounds.
In the eighth quarterly report, TVA said the reactor continues to meet safety and quality targets. It would become the first U.S. reactor to generate 'new' power in nearly two decades and would be the first since Watts Bar Unit One in 1996.
The $4 billion project is expected to begin operation by next December. The new reactor is expected to provide enough energy for about 650,000 homes.
