Two Georgia women killed in GSMNP crash

Two Georgia women died in a single-car crash in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Sunday afternoon.

Sandra Gail Freeman, 63, and Brenda Joyce Payne, 69, both of Gainesville, Ga., died as a result of their injuries in the crash about three miles east of Townsend Wye around 1:39 p.m. Sunday.

Crews found Freeman dead at the scene of the crash. Rural Metro took Payne to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville where she died from her injuries.

The 2007 GMC Envoy the women were traveling in left the roadway and landed upside down in the river off of Little River Road, according to a release from GSMNP.

GSMNP rangers, Rural Metro and the Townsend Fire Department responded to the scene.
