UT men's basketball team take local children on shopping spree

UT basketball players helped 30 kids go on a shopping spree through the Emerald Youth Foundation.

KNOXVILLE - The University of Tennessee men’s basketball team spent a night off from practice on a shopping spree with area children.

Academy Sports & Outdoors gave 30 kids with the Emerald Youth Foundation $200 each to spend on anything in their West Knoxville store.

The Vol athletes paired up with the kids, helping them pick out different shoes, clothes and sports equipment.

"We are in a position that a lot of kids hope to be in one day. It was a big thing for us to come out here and spend time with them,” said sophomore guard Shembari Phillips.

The evening gave the children a chance to meet some positive role models and go home with some quality gear.

"That was the overall goal to have these kids walk out with a big old smile and everything that they wanted,” said Phillips.

This is the first time the three groups have worked together to put on this event.
