Vigil held for Chattanooga bus crash victims

Nov. 22, 2016: The Chattanooga community gathered at New Monumental Baptist Church to remember and pray for the young students killed and injured in a school bus crash.

The Chattanooga community came together Tuesday to mourn the children who died in a tragic bus accident Monday afternoon.

Families, friends, teachers and community members all came out to New Monumental Baptist Church with heavy hearts.

One mother is now grieving over the loss of her daughter while she waits for her other two children to recover in the hospital.

"I didn't think there was going to be anybody dead," Jasmine Mateen said. "Especially not my baby."

The community lifted each other up in prayer.

"I think it really encourages everyone to come together, and sometimes in tragedy, that's what happens," one community member said.

And lifted up each other's spirits.

"This is a really close community," said U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, of Chattanooga. "A lot of aunts, uncles, relatives ... Tremendous sadness."

Community members filled the church, and many had to wait outside before they could mourn and support the families and friends inside.
