Underwater pumpking carving this week at Ripley's Aquarium

Divers are carving pumpkins in the aquarium tank this week as guests watch, and curious sea turtles try to assist!

GATLINBURG - Guests to Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg will get an extra Halloween treat this week!

Divers are carving jack o'lanterns under water in special shows starting at 9:30 a.m. through Thursday, October 27.

The pumpkins are weighted to hold them down, and it takes practice to perform the annual tradition while submerged in water and surrounded by sea life.

One critter in particular likes to get a very close view of the pumpkin carving. Sally the sea turtle is always curious when something new happens in her environment, according to aquarium workers, but add the lure of a possible food source, and she can't stay away!

While we were there on Wednesday, Sally chased the top of the pumpkin when it was cut free and floated to the top of the tank, then came back to try to take a bite out of the pumpkin as it was being carved.

Other divers stay in the tank with the carver to gently nudge Sally and other curious animals away.
