KNOXVILLE - Students and teachers at West Hills Elementary gathered to honor the memory of a former classmate.
12-year-old JaJuan Latham died in a suspected gang-related shooting on April 16, 2016.
On Wednesday the school gathered to install a plaque bearing his name on a basketball goal where he was known to play.
Latham's family was there for the ceremony. Julie Shinlever, a fourth grade teacher at the school, said Latham was the kind of student who always knew how to cheer people up.
"He was special because he would come in with that smile every morning, and it didn't matter what kind of day you were having, you immediately smiled," Shinlever said.
Earlier last month, family and friends gathered to remember Latham one year after his death. Members of the community shared a message of 'enough is enough' in regards to recent gang violence in Knoxville communities.
