Man charged with DUI after crash closes section of road

Update 12:45 pm:

(WBIR) Officials charged a driver with DUI after he crashed his pickup into a utility pole in northwest Knoxville early Tuesday morning.

Hal Ernest Helton, 51, of Knoxville lost control of his vehicle on Beaumont Avenue and slammed into a utility pole at about 3 a.m., according to a Knoxville Police Department release. The impact caused power lines to fall into the roadway.

Crews had to close Beaumont Avenue, between Reed Street and Boyd Street, until noon to make repairs.

Police arrested Helton for DUI, driving without due care, and not having insurance.

Crews have closed Beaumont Avenue between Reed Street and Boyd Street, according to Knoxville police.

The Knoxville Utilities Board said it could take until noon to clear the road.
