Mayo Garden Center worker celebrates 50 years

(WBIR) A long-time face of Mayo Garden Center got a big surprise on Thursday.

Claxton Mayo marked 50 years of working at the Bearden store on Kingston Pike. His son and daughter surprised him with a special lunch to celebrate the milestone.

He's the fourth generation of the business that started in 1878.

Mayo says there's no secret to why it's been around for so long.

"Really I don't know that there's any one answer. We couldn't exist without our wonderful customer base," he said.

Mayo says his dad and his grandfather both worked with the company until they were in their 80s, and he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
