Retiring American flags is a lesson for students

Hardin Valley Academy properly retired four American flags in a special ceremony on Friday.

The flags were the original ones that flew over the school since it first opened. Hardin Valley is now in its 6th year.

The school security officer, James Puckett, helped lead the ceremony. He is retired from the army and wanted to make sure the students understood the significance of what happened today.

"One thing that I hope they took away from here is that when they see the flag again, Old Glory, that it stands for a symbol of freedom that we have in this country," said James Puckett, the School Security Officer who is retired from the Army.

After the ceremony, new flags went up on the poles outside the school.
