YMCA community garden gets $38K grant

The YMCA of East Tennessee received a major donation Tuesday that will help the Community Giving Garden feed more local residents.

The Walmart Foundation presented a check for $38,000 to help provide supplies and resources.

The YMCA has 14 gardens and on-site chickens that provide produce to numerous food banks throughout Knoxville.

"This allows us to provide healthy organic fruits and veggies in addition to the processed food that they get because it is much cheaper to buy processed foods and it feeds a lot of people," said Pam Williams, executive director of Davis Family YMCA. "But this is our way of giving back to people who are working as hard as they can and they just need a little handout. Just a little hand from people in the community."

The money will also go to the YMCA's nutrition education program.
