An adviser to Dick Cheney says it was appropriate for ranch owner Katharine Armstrong to disclose word that the vice president had shot a hunting companion.

Mary Matalin says Armstrong "saw the whole thing," whereas Cheney was only aware of what he did.

The vice president has come under fire for waiting nearly 24 hours before publicly disclosing Saturday's incident. Republican attorney Harry Whittington was peppered with birdshot and is still hospitalized.

Interviewed on NBC's Today show this morning, Matalin said she hopes Cheney's explanation in an interview with the Fox News Channel yesterday will put the matter to rest. Cheney takes full blame for the shooting but is defiantly unapologetic about not publicly disclosing the accident sooner.
