Ed Shouse pulled ahead in the polls Tuesday and will take on Democrat James Berrier in August to fight for the seat of Knox County Trustee.
Shouse is a former city councilman and county commissioner. He serves on the county's audit committee, pension board and investment committee, and spent 20 years in the banking industry followed by 17 years in the shortline railroad industry.
His opponent, Craig Leuthold, has held the position as interim trustee since July 2013 after the embattled John Duncan III pleaded guilty to official misconduct. Leuthold was elected on a 6-4 vote by the county commission to serve out the remaining 18 months of Duncan's term.
Leuthold is a former a two-term commissioner, who spent 16 years in the trustee's office and more than two years in the Property Assessor's Office.
A third candidate, former Trustee's Office worker Barry Hawkins, fell short by several thousand votes.
