Proposed law cracks down on cell phone use in cars

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -There's a new bill going through the House that would make it illegal to call someone or answer your phone in the car.

Several lawmakers are co-sponsoring the bill.

They say drivers who use their cell phones in the car in any fashion are two to three times more likely to crash than drivers who don't.

If the bill passes, drivers will be forced to put down their phones while they're behind the wheel.

Drivers would still be able to talk with hands-free devices but would not be able to hold an actual phone.

Anyone who violates the law would get a warning first.

After a second warning, the driver would have to pay court fees, and after a third warning, drivers would face a fine of up to $500.

The bill needs to pass committee before it goes up for a vote.
