Two people are dead and one injured following a collision between a commuter train and a car in Broward County.

Fort Lauderdale police said the Thursday morning crash was just west of Interstate 95. The victims were identified as 44-year-old Connie Hamblin and 22-year-old Felicia Hatmaker, both of Tennessee. Both are from East Tennessee; Hamblin from LaFollette and Hatmaker from Pioneer.

Connie Hamblin was driving at the time.

Eddie Hamblin, 48 and also of LaFollette, was listed in critical but stable condition at a hospital. No further information has been released.

Witnesses said the car's driver stopped on the tracks when the rail crossing arms lowered in front of and behind the car.

The car tried, and failed, to cross the tracks to avoid the train.

Tri-Rail spokeswoman Bonnie Arnold says train had 250 passengers. Witnesses indicated the gates and lights at the crossing were working properly.
