Slain soldier's son to get lost medal, answers

CHICAGO (AP) - A Tennessee man will receive the long-lost Purple Heart that was awarded posthumously to his father and will meet a man who was standing next to his father when he was killed during World War II.

Pvt. Thomas Bateman's medal will be presented to his son during a ceremony in the Chicago suburbs on Sunday.

Until a foundation that reunites lost Purple Heartswith their rightful owners reached out to him this year, all that Thomas Bateman Jr. knew of his father's death was that it happened in 1945 in the Philippines.

Bateman will meet for the first time with John Trinca, who met Bateman's father about 15 minutes before he was killed and was long troubled that he couldn't remember the slain soldier's name.
