Construction to stabilize Newfound Gap Rd. to start next month

A four-month long rockslide repair project on a well-traveled road in the Smokies is set to begin next month.

Crews will work on a road stabilization project along Newfound Gap Road, just a mile south of the parking area on the North Carolina side. Crews will stabilize the road by rebuilding part of it and adding a retaining wall.

Traffic will be shifted onto the road's shoulder, but drivers should expect lane closures occasionally.

Construction is set to begin January 5th and run through mid-May.
