Traffic on I-75 in Kentucky begins moving after 17-hour standstill

Police said thousands have been in a standstill on Interstate 75 for more than 17 hours.

Kentucky State police said thousands have been in a standstill on Interstate 75 for more than 17 hours.

Around 10:15 a.m. Saturday, traffic began moving on I-75 North at mile marker 41 in London, Ky.

The interstate was shutdown for more than 20 miles on Friday night into Saturday morning between Mount Vernon and London.

There has been movement on I-75 South with most of the wrecks on I-75 North.

The National Guard has been called to help people caught in the middle of the standstill.

Many people stranded in their cars have been without bathroom facilities, food and water.

Kentucky police have shutdown traffic at mile marker 48 northbound in London City and mile marker 68 in Mount Vernon.

Police said there are currently no hotel vacancies in London, and all roadways in London were unsafe for travel early Saturday morning. As temperatures continue to drop Saturday evening, roadways will continue to become more difficult to navigate.

Law enforcement is asking people to please stay indoors and off the roadways.

I-75 North was closed at Exit 41. Traffic was getting diverted to travel on Kentucky State Route 461.
