Work on Cumberland Gap Tunnel underway

Work on the Cumberland Gap Tunnel will affect traffic on Highway 25E between Harrogate and Middlesboro next week.

The work will start Tuesday, March 18. Crews will begin work in the northbound tunnel, and all traffic will be diverted to the southbound tunnel during that time. Work will switch to the southbound tunnel on April 4.

Traffic backups are expected while all traffic is diverted into a single tunnel. In addition, vehicles with loads greater than 10 feet wide, 6 feet, 6 inches inches high, and weighing over 80,000 lbs. will be restricted.

This project will repair sub-grade failures and erosion due to groundwater beneath the tunnels and is expected to be completed by May 9, 2014.
