A Kentucky lawmaker admitted he has smoked pot before, and is introducing a bill to make marijuana legal for medical purposes.

State Senator Perry Clark is introducing the bill in memory of the late Lexington attorney and perennial gubernatorial candidate, Gatewood Galbraith.

For years, the late Galbraith was a proponent of legalized marijuana.

His daughter spoke at the bill announcement Thursday.

"There are hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians who are suffering, and they need and deserve access to this plant that our grandfathers and great-grandfathers grew by the thousands of acres," said Molly Galbraith.

Kentucky is one of the top producers of illegal marijuana.

The state has near perfect conditions for growing the plant and was once a major producer of industrial help before it was banned by the federal government.
