Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a crash in Grainger County, that followed a high-speed chase in Claiborne County.
THP says Kyle Brooks, 51, was killed. Brooks' passenger, Chase Starkey, 19, of Knoxville was injured. He was taken to UT Medical Center, where his condition is not being released.
Investigators says Brooks was traveling west bound on State Hwy. 131 when he lost control and veered off the right side of the roadway.
He over-corrected, drove into oncoming traffic, then struck a tree.
Claiborne County deputies said they had backed off a chase that led into Grainger County.
They say they had caught Brooks in the act, trying to steal an ATV.
The Claiborne County sheriff says that the truck Brooks was driving had been stolen, and so had a gun he had in the vehicle. They are also now investigating whethere Brooks was connected to some stolen property in Blount County.
A wreck that claimed the life of a robbery suspect followed a high-speed chase that stretched from Claiborne County into Grainger County Thursday.
The crash happened around 10:00 a.m. on State Highway 131 at Delmer Welch Road in Grainger County.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper investigating the crash said the Chevy pickup was being pursued by Claiborne County deputies in connection with an alleged robbery of an ATV.
The deputies had backed off the intensity of their pursuit because of the nature of the road just before the crash and didn't see it happen.
Two people were inside the truck. The driver, who deputies say had a lengthy criminal record, was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics airlifted the passenger to UT Medical Center.
Traffic was being diverted to alternate routes for most of the day Thursday.
