Knox County School Board members met Monday evening to discuss school security as well as school expansion during their monthly work session.
Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre says school safety has been a main focus of discussion. He says they were already planning on discussing the issue, but that the school shooting in Newtown brought the issue to the forefront.
Board members say they plan to carefully examine procedures to keep students safe.
McIntyre also talked about an expansion at Belle Morris Elementary School that will increase enrollment. That expansion will add several classrooms and highlights the district's efforts to go green.
"We're excited about it. It's our first major foray into the environmentally friendly, sort of green area. We think it's going to be a great addition, a great addition to the school," said Dr. McIntyre.
McIntyre says he expects the expansion to be finished by the middle of the next school year.
