Developers will officially break ground on the University Commons project next Wednesday.
The development will revamp an abandoned brownfield just off Kingston Pike between Volunteer Boulevard and the Alcoa Highway.
A new Publix and Walmart will anchor the shopping center, right by UT's campus.
Crews have been working on the site for a few weeks now, but the developers will give a more detailed update on the project at next week's groundbreaking.
Both Knoxville and Knox County mayors will also be there.
