Bryon Hartshaw, 28, told police he and a friend were walking on West New Street near downtown Knoxville when a suspect in a white vehicle approached them at about 8:20 on Sunday.
Hartshaw said the suspect got out of the vehicle and challenged him about a woman according to a KPD press release.
The two argued, and then the suspect shot Hartshaw in the stomach with a small handgun.
Police say Hartshaw was unwilling to work with them at the scene of the shooting.
He was taken to UT Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.
