A man is dead after exchanging gunfire with two Maryville police officers and a Blount County Sheriff's Office deputy in Maryville overnight.
According to Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp, just after 2:30 am, officers received a call of shots being fired in East Maryville.
Shortly after, another call was reported of shots hitting a moving vehicle on East Broadway Avenue.
During the search for the suspect, a shot was fired at an officer from an unknown location.
The officers set up a perimeter in the area, and finally located the suspect in front of a vacant business at 1811 East Broadway Ave. The man forced his way into the building to get away from the officers. Chief Crisp said the man fired on the officers from inside the building.
When the man came out of the building with a pistol, the officers ordered him to drop it. Finally, the officers were forced to fire at the man who was still threatening the officers. He was transported to UT Medical Center, where he died. His name has not been released.
The officers were not injured.
The two Maryville Police officers are on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Chief Crisp said a Blount County Sheriff's deputy was also involved in the shooting.
