Powell and Oak Ridge square off tonight in a key District 3-AAA battle. The winner of this game will be the favorite to win the district title.
Both teams come in undefeated with Oak Ridge at 2-0 and Powell at 3-0.
Powell hasn't lost a regular season game since 2009 and was the 5A state runner-up in 2011. Tyshawn Gardin is Powell's most explosive player. He rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries in last week's win over Halls.
Oak Ridge already has a marquee win under its belt after beating Farragut on the road in Week Zero. Rian Hall has performed well at quarterback after the graduation of the Wildcats' all-time leading passer Bradley Zulliger.
Sevier County hosts Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett tonight. The Smoky Bears and Indians played two instant classic games last year. Dobyns-Bennett won the regular season game 42-41 in Kingsport.
In the second round of the playoffs, the Smoky Bears went back to Kingsport and overcame a 28-0 deficit to win 35-28 in overtime.
Both schools enter the game 3-0 and a Smoky Bear has claimed a USA Today
High School Sports Player of the Week award in each of the first three
weeks.
Austin-East and Alcoa square off in Blount County as the Tornadoes look for revenge from last year's loss. The Roadrunners became the first team not named Maryville to beat Alcoa since 2006.
Austin-East benefited from great special teams play in that game, using an onside kick and two kick return touchdowns to pull off the 24-7 upset.
The Roadrunners (0-3) are adjusting to a new coaching staff and have played one of the area's toughest schedules so far, with losses to West, Powell and Fulton.
Alcoa (2-1) is looking for its eighth state title in the last nine year, and is healthier and deeper than last year's squad that bowed out in the 3A quarterfinals.
