Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Markel Starks scored the go-ahead basket in a defensive struggle, as No. 20 Georgetown took a 37-36 decision over the Tennessee Volunteers at the Verizon Center.
During Friday's SEC/Big East Challenge contest, the two teams combined to shoot just 31-for-90 from the field and neither posted a double-digit scorer. Starks' jumper with 4:08 left to play proved to be the difference, as neither team could manage a single point over the remainder of the game.
Greg Whittington, Otto Porter and Mikael Hopkins each chipped in eight points for the Hoyas (5-1), who shot just 36.4 percent from the field.
The Vols (4-2) got two open looks on their final possession, but Skylar McBee and Jordan McRae each misfired on 3-pointers to secure the win for Georgetown.
McBee hit two triples earlier and finished with eight points. Trae Golden also scored eight in the setback.
