Peyton Manning was throwing passes Tuesday morning, but not to his Denver Broncos teammates.

Manning made a surprise appearance and spoke to students at Gateway High School in Aurora. He tossed balls to students seated in the bleachers, answered questions from them and also gave out Broncos gear, according to the Broncos' official website.

Gateway High principal Bill Hedges told DenverBroncos.com that it was Manning who reached out to the school to see if there was anything he could do to show support to its students.

Gateway High became a staging area last summer for families searching for people injured in the Aurora theater massacre. A 2012 graduate of the school was killed and a football player wounded in the mass shooting, and numerous other Gateway students were at the theater that July night watching the premiere showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

"It really just lifts the spirits of the students," Hedges said. "He doesn't know any of our students, he doesn't know us, so for him to reach out to us like that, it's really special."
