HOOVER, Ala. -- After the first round of action at the SEC Women's Golf Championship in Hoover, Ala., the Lady Vol golf team sits in a tie for eighth with a 312 (+24) card.

"This was a really long, tough course today and we didn't get off to a good start at all," head coach Judi Pavon said. "The front nine is tougher, so we knew we had to play well on the back. I'm proud of the way we finished the last few holes to keep us in the tournament. Although we are in eighth, we are only nine shots from the lead."

Senior Sara Monberg led the way for Tennessee carding a 3-over par 75 to wrap up the day in a tie for seventh. Senior Erica Popson and junior Chessey Thomas followed at 6-over 78 to be tied for 27th place, and sophomore AJ Newell completed UT's scores at 9-over and follows in a tie for 54th. Sophomore Daeun Song finished 10-over par 82.

"Sara came through in a big way for us today and had a solid round to lead the team," Pavon said.

Tennessee carded 11 birdies in the opening round, with Newell and Thomas each recording three.

LSU led the field with a 303 (+15). No. 2 Alabama followed in second (304), while No. 18 Georgia (306), Kentucky (306), Mississippi State (306) and South Carolina (306) sit in a tie for third. Eighth-ranked Vanderbilt (309) wrapped up the first day in seventh, while Tennessee (312) tied with Missouri (312) in eighth. No. 6 Arkansas (313) sits in 10th. No. 7 Florida (315) finished the first round in 11th, and Mississippi (317), No. 24 Texas A&M (318) and Auburn (321) rounded out the competition in the 12th through 14th spots, respectively.
