URBANA, Ill. - The No. 4 seeded University of Tennessee women's tennis duo of Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely fought hard Friday afternoon to continue their NCAA Doubles Championship run with a three-set victory over Pepperdine.
With the 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win over the nation's No. 17 ranked team of Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara, the Lady Vols duo became just the fourth and fifth Lady Vols to win 40 doubles matches in a single season.
Their 40th win of the year puts them in a tie for fifth place all-time on the UT Single Season Doubles Wins list with Caitlin Whoriskey who achieved the feat in 2010.
Tennessee will advance to face Jacqueline Cako and Nicole Smith of Arizona State Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals. Cako and Smith entered the NCAA Tournament with a No. 31 ranking in the nation, but have defeated No. 19 Texas and No. 15 Tulsa to find themselves in the quarterfinal round match.
This marks the second straight season the Lady Vols have reached the NCAA Quarters. Szekely earned the trip last season with Natalie Pluskota.
